Internship Placements
Prof. Speyers has placed over 100 students in internships throughout the Charleston Lowcountry, state of South Carolina and South East. Over 80% of said internships were paid. Dozens have lead to full-time employment. These connections were nurtured through networking functions, cold outreach and making good use of the Alumni network in Alumni events.
ART 469 is an upper-division experiential learning course designed to transition students from academic study into professional graphic design practice through supervised, real-world industry placements. Students apply skills developed in web design, print production, branding, and visual communication while working within established studios, agencies, in-house design teams, or professional organizations. The course emphasizes industry-standard workflows, client communication, production schedules, revision cycles, and collaborative practices that mirror full-time design environments. In addition to hands-on project work, students engage in reflective documentation, professional goal setting, and portfolio development to articulate their contributions and learning outcomes. Networking, workplace etiquette, and career readiness are integral components, ensuring students graduate with practical experience, professional references, and a clearer understanding of how design functions within real business contexts.

Employer Highlights
Design internships allow employers to work with emerging designers who are already familiar with professional tools, workflows, and collaborative studio environments. Interns can contribute meaningfully to web, print, and branding projects—supporting tasks such as layout production, asset preparation, content updates, brand extensions, and design revisions—while gaining real-world experience. For employers, internships provide an opportunity to mentor potential future hires, evaluate talent in real project settings, and integrate fresh creative perspectives into active client or in-house work.
