Travel Courses

ART 280 is a field-based photography course developed to teach students how visual storytelling can deepen cultural understanding and document global human experience. Centered on travel to locations such as Nepal, Thailand, and Germany/Switzerland, the curriculum blends technical photographic instruction with hands-on exploration of place, culture, and narrative. Students learn to work as photojournalists—observing respectfully, anticipating moments, responding to unfamiliar environments, and capturing images that convey context, emotion, and meaning. Lessons emphasize ethical representation, cross-cultural sensitivity, and the use of photography to interpret landscapes, rituals, daily life, and local histories. Throughout the program, students refine both in-camera technique and digital post-production while developing cohesive visual essays that reflect each location’s unique cultural identity. By the end of the course, students gain not only advanced photographic abilities but also an expanded global perspective and a deeper appreciation for how creative practice intersects with geography, sociology, and lived human stories.
